Try to forget the fact that Bing Crosby probably never had to record another song in his life after he immortalized "White Christmas." If you can do that, you'll find plenty more to like in this crooning Christmas collection. There's the Romantic Bing, charming the tinsel right off the tree with "The Christmas Song," and that cure for cabin fever, "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!" There's the Reverent Bing, solemnly singing "Adeste Fideles." And of course, there's Bing the Showman, belting out "Good King Wenceslas" with a bit of that ole vaudeville shine. But no matter what you're told, "White Christmas" will be the number one reason for sticking this one in your stocking. And who can blame you? It's as timeless now as it was way back when. --Steve Gdula |
Christmas necessity
It's just not Christmas without Bing! This is a must have for your holiday enjoyment.
Great Christmas Memories
Received promptly and was happy to have this classic to add to my Christmas CD collection.
Great Music
This is an awesome CD. It's the music I grew up listening to as a child. I'd recommend it to anyone who is looking for the good old days Christmas music.
Bingle Bells To You......
Ahhh.... it's 1940 something, and there's the Bingsta in a recording studio not only having to re-record "White Christmas" but also laying down the other tracks included herein. He never conciously thought that the song was anything special. And, to him, this was just another project to loan that rich voice to. I am sure he had no idea that he'd do a duet with David Bowie many years later. But, that is the magic of life people.
Speaking of magic, here it is. The all-time CLASSIC Christmas album. How did this come to be? Well, a number of good reasons. I am certain the melancholy and heartfelt vocal of the title song had something to do with it. But, upon closer examination you will hear the ballads and classic hymns of Christmas done with reverence and class and, yes, even with that late 1940's orchestra leading the way.
This is a pure example of how a recording can be totally synonymous with a holiday. In fact, I have a belief that every family in America in the 50's owned a copy of this. The reason why I love it is because of the diversity here. You can go from a dirge like "Faith of Our Fathers" to the tender "Silent Night" and then to kicking it in with the groove of "Jingle Bells" (with the great Andrew Sisters). Not only that, but he made fairly unknown songs part of the landscape of American music. Namely, "Christmas in Killarney" and "Mele Kalikimaka", (Why do I always think of Chevy Chase with that song?).
This is a testimony to earlier, simple times, when no digital technology existed and things were more pure. And we are the lucky ones for still having it with us. It's hard to believe it's been around for 60 years. Some may even feel like it's been around forever. But, if you get this and listen to it each year, it will seem like yesterday. You carry it in your soul always (but mainly in your heart).
There is nothing better than listening to this in season, watching the snow storm outside, propping up you feet next to the warm embers, and having a sip or two of fine brandy. It's what I do best, after all.
Nevermind that, this selection is a very high choice in your collection if you don't have it. This is the CLASSIC of all CLASSIC Christmas albums.
Get it now or else risk me showing up in your house Christmas Eve with a band of snifting brandy rebel rousers. Get the picture?

This was a favorite of mine from my childhood. I am happy to now have it in CD format! The vinyl didn't fare so well!
