Great coffee when it works
Bought a refurb Italia about 2 years ago, (seems to be a TON of refurbs on the market for some reason?) loved it for the first couple weeks until it died. Had to send it in to Saeco (cost me $40 to ship) got it back in about a month, worked great until today. I refilled the water chamber, and all lights went out. Plug still works, checked everything without taking it apart. Hopefully it is just the switch or something. Anyway, if you buy one of these, expect some great espresso, but also expect problems with the machine in a short time.
Espresso at the touch of a button
I bought a re-conditioned Saeco Italia 10 months ago and love it. I like that it is a super-automatic; just add beans, refill the water reservoir, and push the green button. Voila, a fabulous shot of espresso. Please note that the model is not self-cleaning (none are). You will need to run the cleansing cycle every couple of months with an espresso cleaning agent, and you will want to remove and clean the filter and housing (a tool is provided to do this). A weak shot, leaking on the counter, or the unit not working all serve as reminders that you need to clean. Hopefully you can remember to do this before panic sets in. So sit back, relax, and enjoy a shot of your favorite espresso blend (my vote is with Sweet Maria's Puro Scuro).
It works and the reconditioned price is good but with problems
I have read the bad reviews and a some good reviews as well. These sum up the Italia. It is a great deal for the refurbished price but count on some problems. The customer support at Saeco is non existant. They say in the manual do not return to retailer. The retailers tell you to return it to Saeco, but Saeco tells you to return it to the retailer! That is a runaround. My unit had a leaky water reservoir. With all of the hassle from Saeco support i decided to keep it anyway. However sometimes it leaks water sometimes all over the counter. I do not remove the tank to refill the water. If you just fill the tank without removing it, then it will not leak ( I think the seal from the water tank is delicate). It is also a very tweeky machine. The grounds full sensor sometimes refuses to reset when the spent grounds hopper is emptied. The out of water sensor sometimes comes on while the water reservoir is full. For best results don't set the ginder on the very finest grind because the pump has difficulty moving water with the backpressure. I do use the largest coffee amount. If you set the grind to the a notch or 2 above the finest grind then the unit would pack a good "puck". I have read where other owners have had to tear the unit apart and do mechanical work to get the grind finer. BE SURE AND ADJUST GRIND WHILE THE UNIT IS GRINDING OR DAMAGE CAN OCCUR.
We have had the unit for 3 months now and it is still working. We have made over 200 espresso shots so I would say I have gotten my moneys worth given the reconditioned price.
In summary, Its a good deal at the reconditioned price but don't expect perfection or product support from Saeco.
Update: Take care not to clog the milk steamer. Mine clogged and the hose blew off inside the machine rendering it useless. It took me over 4 hours to disassemble the machine and reattach the hose. Luckily i got it together again and it is still working ( but now I have two extra screws 8-( ).
Two for Two
I bought a Saeco Italia from Amazon a year and a half ago and have had no trouble with it in any way since. I liked it so much (the espresso is excellent and the steam wand is actually worth using) that I bought one for my parents as a gift soon after. Their's has also continued to work flawlessly from the time of purchase. I am sorry for those customers who have had bad experiences and I do not suggest that it is their fault, but felt that I owed a fair hearing to what I consider to be a great product that has yet to fail me.
excellent espresso each and every time
I don't understand all the negative reviews concerning the reconditioned saeco espresso machine? I have owned this machine for 2 1/2 years and have never had a problem. Perhaps these individuals have no idea what a espresso should taste like? Easy to maintain, simple to use, always good crema, etc. Referred to a friend, loves it. Highly recommended.
